Years 3–4
The Middle Primary Skill Builder Literacy Course focuses on core Literacy skills using Haileybury’s Explicit Instruction model of teaching and learning. Lessons will be structured using the I Do, We Do, You Do explicit instruction framework, incorporating teacher modelling of skills, concepts and self-talk, teacher-led guided practice and independent practice.
Students will engage in daily reading, spelling, grammar, punctuation and writing focus sessions. In reading, students will build decoding and fluency skills. Intensive daily text analysis will focus on literal, inferential and critical reading comprehension strategies and higher order thinking.
Daily writing sessions will support students to structure complex sentences and incorporate high level vocabulary in context. Through the week, students will use visual support and self-talk to harness their creative ideas into a well-structured persuasive writing piece. Other areas of focus include spelling, grammar, understanding and use of figurative language and punctuation skills.

- Reading – decoding, fluency and comprehension (literal, inferential, critical comprehension and higher order thinking)
- Spelling strategies
- Language Conventions – grammar, punctuation and figurative language
- Writing – sentence structure and persuasive writing.
Years 5–6
The Upper Primary Skill Builder Literacy Course focuses on core literacy skills using a series of modelled texts as the basis to develop and hone reading comprehension, language and writing skills.
Through the week, students will be immersed in different text types, and with teacher guidance, will investigate the different elements of construction that build meaning for a reader, analysing and evaluating vocabulary choice, grammatical concepts, punctuation elements, figurative language and structure, working to apply this knowledge in their own writing.
The learning developed throughout the course will culminate in students producing written narrative and persuasive writing pieces.
Skills covered include:
- Reading Comprehension – both literal and inferential, to build an interpretation
- Language Conventions – grammar, punctuation and figurative language
- Writing – narrative structure and persuasive essay structure, vocabulary use, sentence level structure and punctuation.
Years 7–8
The Lower Secondary Skill Builder Literacy Course focuses on core secondary literacy skills using a series of modelled texts as the basis to develop and hone reading comprehension, language skills and writing structures.
Through the week, students will be immersed in different text types, and with teacher guidance, will investigate the different elements of construction that build meaning for a reader, grammatical concepts, punctuation elements, figurative language and structure, working to apply this knowledge in their own writing.
The learning developed throughout the course will culminate in students producing written narrative and analytical writing pieces.

- Reading Comprehension – decoding unfamiliar vocabulary, developing literal and inferential reading skills
